The Houston Oilers have discussed a possible three-way trade involving Oilers running back Alonzo Highsmith and linebackers Jesse Solomon of the Dallas Cowboys and Lawrence Taylor of the New York Giants.
The Houston Chronicle said yesterday the trade would send Highsmith to the Cowboys, Solomon to the Giants and Taylor to the Oilers. The transaction also would include extra draft choices for the Giants, the Chronicle reported.
During a meeting Saturday afternoon in the Oilers' hotel before Houston's preseason game in Irving, Tex., against the Cowboys, General Manager Mike Holovak talked with Taylor's agent, Joe Courrege, about the possibilities, the newspaper said.
"The problem with a three-way deal is that three sides have to agree," Holovak said. "It's hard enough to get two sides to agree on anything."
Meanwhile the Oilers made their final roster cuts by releasing 12 players. The team cut tackles Joey Banes and Doug Williams, guard Tommy Robison, wide receivers Kenny Jackson and Frank Miotke, running back Victor Jones, cornerback Billy Bell, quarterbacks Chuck Hartlieb and Don McPherson, linebackers Richard Newbill and John Brantley and kicker Brian Lowe.
Pro Bowl cornerback Kevin Ross ended a 42-day holdout, signing what is believed to be a four-year contract, although terms were not disclosed.
Got down to the 47-man limit. Cut veteran running back Terrence Flagler, tight end Steve Folsom, running backs Lorenzo Hampton and Broderick Sargent, wide receiver Derrick Shepard, linebacker Randy Shannon, guards Greg Johnson and Dave Franks and tackle Mike Graybill. The Cowboys also made injury settlement offers to tight end Keith Jennings, linebacker Willis Crockett and wide receiver Michael Williams. Offensive lineman Louis Cheek made the club but the NFL suspended him through the first three weeks of the season for steroid use.
Released running back Undra Johnson, cornerback Rickey Royal and defensive back George Streeter.
Waived 11-year linebacker Keena Turner, 10-year defensive back Eric Wright and seven-year linebacker Jim Fahnhorst.
The club reportedly also waived Plan B defensive lineman John Shannon and second-year linebacker Antonio Goss.
Also, nose tackle Michael Carter had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and will be lost for an undetermined amount of time.
Waived 12-year veteran tight end Mickey Shuler.
