FREDERICK, MD., SEPT. 2 -- Salem scored four runs in the first inning to back Keith Richardson's six-hitter and beat Frederick, 6-3, before 4,315 today at Harry Grove Stadium in the regular season finale.

Keys Manager Wally Moon, saving his pitchers for the Carolina League Championship Series, started David Riddle (2-3), normally a reliever.

The Buccaneers started fast. Leadoff batter Greg Sims walked and came around on Riddle's error and Bruce Schreiber's double.

Schreiber came home on Ken Trusky's single up the middle. Trusky advanced to third on Riddle's errant throw (his second of the inning) to first and scored on Armando Romero's sacrifice fly to right. Domingo Merejo tripled and scored on Tim Hines's sacrifice fly to center.

The Buccaneers added two runs on one hit and two errors in the fourth to extend their lead to 6-0.

Roman Rodriguez reached and advanced to third on a error by first basemen Mel Wearing. Shortstop Keith Kessinger, trying to throw Rodriguez out going to third, hit him on the helmet, which allowed Rodriguez to score when the ball ricocheted into foul territory. Greg Sims reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on Wearing's error and scored on Romero's two-out double.

Frederick, after being held to two hits in the first five innings, scored two runs on three hits to trail by 6-2 in the sixth.

Roy Gilbert reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on Dan Berthel's bloop double to left. Wearing singled sharply up the middle to score Gilbert and Berthel. One out later, T.R. Lewis stroked a single to put runners on the corners with two away, but Pat Hedge struck out swinging to end the inning.
