Woodie Wright turned in the fastest mile, 1:55 3/5, on a special Rosecroft program last night that showcased Maryland's best-bred standardbreds in eight final divisions of the state's Sire Stakes program.

Every division was worth over $50,000. There was no surprise that the fastest performance came in the 3-year-old pacing colt and gelding class. Earlier this year Woodie Wright paced a 1:53 3/5 at Rosecroft, at the time a world record for a gelding age 3.

Don Irvine drove Woodie Wright like a world champion, moving quickly for the front and then refusing to yield to an early challenge from Soho Dan with driver Jim Morand. Soho Dan was the favorite and Woodie Wright the second betting choice.

"I had him parked so I knew I had him beat," Irvine said about his aggressive driving against Morand. Irvine had no doubt that Woodie Wright could handle a tough trip. "Last week in the Open, he came home in 28 {seconds}," Irvine said. "I just thought he was the class of the race."

Woodie Wright got his eighth victory of the year in the Sire Stakes final, finishing 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Hodge, who followed him around the track. Soho Dan tired badly after failing to overtake Woodie Wright and finished last.

The best effort by a filly during the night was by Peace Runner, a lifetime mark of 1:56 in the 2-year-old pacing filly division. Tom Jackson drove her sixth win in seven career starts.

"Last week when I drove her at Delmarva, she was really hot," said Jackson. "This week they made some equipment changes and she was more manageable.

"I was really worried in the last ten steps," he said, referring to a late bid against Peace Runner by Time Slips By driven by Steve Warrington. "But she really dug in." Peace Runner held on by a nose.

Earlier on the card, Clovis Mon Ami won the 2-year-old colt trot in a track-record 2:01 1/5.

Other divisional winners were: Seductive Lass (2-year-old filly trot); Chuck's Buck (3-year-old colt trot); Miss Sign Post (3-year-old filly trot); G E's Prince (2-year-old colt pace); and Super Phyllis (3-year-old filly pace).
