Magruder, which had sent junior running back Bruce Ballard through Paint Branch's defense all night, fooled everyone by switching to the pass in overtime to earn a 20-17 Montgomery County Division III football victory before a large crowd at Magruder.

Ballard had gained 102 yards on 23 carries. So Paint Branch had every reason to believe that 18th-ranked Magruder (1-0) would give him the ball after his team had fallen behind by 17-14 on Pat Anderson's overtime field goal.

But on first down from the Paint Branch 10-yard line, junior quarterback Andy McLean faked the handoff to Ballard, rolled right and found sophomore halfback Mickey Myers alone in the right corner of the end zone for the victory.

"I was supposed to run the seam pattern," said Myers. "But I saw the quarterback rolling out, so I figured I had to cut back, and I was wide open. This feels really great because it's my first high school touchdown."

The game was tied at 14 after regulation. Each team then had four chances to score from 10 yards out.

"They really surprised us by going with that play," said Paint Branch senior linebacker Sean Radin. "We expected Ballard to run the ball. He's pretty tough and had been doing well all game. We were really keying on him, and I guess they faked us out.

No. 12 Paint Branch (0-1), which had only five returning starters and just two on offense, had taken the lead in overtime on Anderson's 32-yard field goal after the Panthers were unable to score a touchdown and lost yardage back to the 15. But Coach Dick Mantel said he thought the Colonels might go to the air.

"{Coach Roy} Lester will do that," said Mantel. "That is his game. He will power right at you again and again and then set you up for the play action. We were supposed to have that play defensed but someone made a mistake."

Magruder led by 7-0 after one quarter as sophomore halfback Daryl Wilbanks skirted around right end for an eight-yard touchdown. The run ended an eight-play, 3 1/2-minute drive that began on the Paint Branch 39-yard line.

The Panthers tied it with 5:54 left in the first half. After Kelvin Jeter intercepted McLean at the Magruder 30, Paint Branch's Scott Woodring passed to Duane Ashman for nine yards to the 21.

Woodring faked a handoff and found David Lee open in the left flat. Lee broke outside, then cut inside for the 21-yard touchdown.

Magruder took a 14-7 fourth-quarter lead after Paint Branch appeared to be driving for the go-ahead score. But the Panthers' attempt to get fancy cost them.

Trying a reverse, Jamal Thomas fumbled. Keith Yuhas picked up the ball and ran 58 yards to give Magruder a 14-7 lead with 11:48 left in the game.

But Paint Branch tied it up as Ashman completed an 11-play five-minute drive by busting up the middle for a nine-yard touchdown.
