DATA: Redskins favored by 12 . . . Former Redskins offensive line coach Joe Bugel makes his head coaching debut with Cardinals. Phoenix, which will start QB Timm Rosenbach (three interceptions in only NFL start), lost its final six games last season and was 0-4 in preseason. Redskins are 25-5 in last 30 games against Cardinals, including victories in last 11 meetings at RFK Stadium. Washington won its final five in 1989. Redskins are 3-6 in openers under Coach Joe Gibbs, whose career .669 winning percentage was best of any coach in 1980s.

DATA: Browns by 3. Pittsburgh, last in NFL offense last year but a playoff team, debuts system of new offensive coordinator Joe Walton, former coach of the Jets. Pittsburgh will start 21 of 22 players that started each of final seven games of last season. Browns have four new defensive starters and four new starters on offensive line. Cleveland is 29-11 at home against Steelers. Browns defeated Pittsburgh on opening day last year, 51-0.

They have three new starters on offensive line, including two Plan B free agents. Miami has lost its last five openers. QB Dan Marino is 5-8 against New England with 19 TD passes and 22 ints.
Jets at Bengals

DATA: Bengals by 9. New Jets Coach Bruce Coslet faces team he served as an assistant coach for past nine seasons. QB Ken O'Brien starts for Jets. Bengals are 2-4 in openers under Coach Sam Wyche. In five games against Jets, QB Boomer Esiason has completed 55.6 percent of his passes for 10 TDs (four ints.).

DATA: Lions by 6. QB Rodney Peete starts for Lions, who won their last five of 1989 and went 4-0 in preseason. Detroit has gone unbeaten in preseason two other times in its 57-year history, and went to league title game each time (1952 and 1954). Buccaneers (5-9 in openers) have 18 new players including RB Gary Anderson.
