SPIRA CONT'D: The lawyer for Howard Spira wants a federal judge to order New York Yankees partner George Steinbrenner to turn over all documents and tape recordings that he has from his relationship with the self-described gambler.
David Greenfield said that he would make his motion on Friday, when Spira is scheduled for a pretrial hearing before U.S. District Judge Louis Stanton.
Spira is charged in an eight-count indictment with attempting to extort Steinbrenner and threatening to harm the Yankees' former majority owner and former New York outfielder Dave Winfield. No trial date has been set.
MARTIN CASE: Eight jurors were seated to hear the case against Detroit bar owner William Reedy, 53, charged with drunken driving in the crash that killed former Yankees manager Billy Martin last Christmas.
Opening statements were scheduled for today in the trial of Reedy, a longtime friend of the five-time Yankees manager, said Town Justice P. Murray Benjamin. The trial in Port Crane, N.Y., is expected to last a week.
