Latroy Askew rushed for 204 yards on 12 carries and scored four touchdowns, the first on a 49-yard punt return, to help Gar-Field to a 30-12 victory over host North Stafford last night.

"It was our offensive line against theirs," said Askew. "Our guys opened the holes for me, which allowed me to cut back."

Gar-Field opened the scoring on Askew's nifty punt return and Matthew Daly's extra point with 4:51 left in the first quarter.

North Stafford (1-1) then went on a 12-play, 50-yard drive that was halted at the 10 when James Keresey, who was rolling left, had his pass intended for Ambrose Gordon intercepted by sophomore defensive back Carroll Bridgett in the end zone.

"We came into the game hoping to control the ball in an effort to keep it away from their offense," said Gar-Field Coach Chuck White. "We didn't do a good job of that, but we did make some big plays."

After stopping Gar-Field, North Stafford lost 13 yards in two plays, which set up a third and 23 from the 11-yard line. Trying to play it safe just before the half, the Wolverines tried to run the ball, but after a bad handoff, Matthew Timmerman recovered the ball at the 8 for Gar-Field.

It took one play for Askew to bully his way up the middle and Daly's kick gave the Indians a 14-0 lead with 2:02 left before the half.

Again, North Stafford couldn't move the ball and was forced to punt. But the snap was high and Gar-Field recovered at the 14. With time for one play before halftime, Daly kicked a 30-yard field goal to extend the Indians' lead to 17-0.

From its 31, North Stafford moved to the Gar-Field 41 on the second half's first possession. Dwayne Roy got to the goal line, where he was met by Bridgett and fumbled into the end zone.

Gar-Field (2-0) took over from the 20 and went on a seven-play, 80-yard drive that featured a 61-yard touchdown sweep around the left side by Askew.

North Stafford then went 72 yards in seven plays, scoring on Daraka Brown's 13-yard touchdown run with 9:25 left in the game.

Gar-Field brought the kickoff return out to the 17. Askew, sweeping right, then ran 83 yards to score with 8:42 left.

Brown's second touchdown from 13 yards, with just under five minutes left, capped the Wolverines' scoring.
