Largo defensive star Adrian Calame was all over the field last night, rushing through Crossland's offensive line and chasing down Cavaliers ball-carriers. But Largo needed more than his effort to gain a 20-8 victory at Friendly High School.

Byron Nunn provided the offensive spark, returning a second-half punt 84 yards to put the Lions up by 13-8. Calame -- seven tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and one near-interception -- and his supporting cast did the rest, rebuffing every other Crossland scoring threat in the Prince George's 4A game.

"It's not me. It's everybody. Teamwork," said Calame. "Everybody worked hard this weekend to prepare for this game and we came together as a team."

Crossland dropped to 0-2 and Largo, which would have added to its margin of victory if Nunn hadn't lost a fumble at the Cavaliers 4-yard line in the first half, improved to 2-0 and established itself as a solid contender for the league title.

But the Lions will receive more formidable challenges when they entertain league powers Oxon Hill and Friendly later in the season. And Largo, which turned over the ball four times last night, will need to jell on offense to fulfill its expectations.

"I don't think any coach is satisfied when you have that many turnovers," said Rocco Romeo, who is in his 21st season as the Lions coach. "Both teams were guilty of that tonight."

But Largo's overall showing last night, along with last week's 25-0 shellacking of DuVal, aren't bad ways to get started.

Crossland did have some success against the Lions defense as running back James Cunningham gained 112 yards on 12 carries.

After LaVon Williams powered up the middle from the 1 with 8:54 left to put Largo ahead by 20-8, Crossland moved from its 31-yard line to Largo's 5 in seven plays.

Calame, however, was an intimidating presence again, bursting through the line and forcing quarterback Eric Evans to fumble the ball back to the 14, where a Crossland player recovered. Largo allowed no other scoring opportunities after that, shoving the Cavaliers back to the 21 before taking over on downs. Largo (2-0) 7 0 6 7 20 Crossland (0-2) 0 0 8 0 8
