Second-ranked Springbrook forced seven turnovers and held Magruder to 102 total yards to defeat the 11th-ranked Colonels, 48-7, in a contest of Montgomery County teams.

Leonard Green provided the spark for the Blue Devils, rushing for two touchdowns and scoring on a 69-yard punt return. For the game, Green returned four punts for 166 yards, rushed for 83 yards and returned an interception that led to his second score.

"I expected to get beat," Magruder Coach Roy Lester said. "I just didn't expect to get beat that bad. I don't know how we won the first week {against Paint Branch}. This is just an indication today about how good we are. I didn't think we were going to be any good to start with."

The Blue Devils (2-0) started quickly, running the score to 35-0 by halftime. Green started the scoring by rushing 15 yards through the right side four minutes into the game. Later in the quarter, Springbrook's Tim Bannister blocked Andy Ryder's punt, and Tyrone Frazier plucked the ball out of the air and ran 31 yards untouched for the score.

Blue Devils quarterback Tony Sawyer completed only three passes, but two of them went for first-half touchdowns. Sawyer found wide receiver Omar Franklin alone behind the defense for a 33-yard touchdown at the beginning of the second quarter. On Springbrook's next series, Sawyer completed a 20-yard scoring pass to Michael Gillespie on fourth down to give the Blue Devils a 28-point lead.

Green scored Springbrook's next two touchdowns. He rushed 43 yards for the last touchdown of the first half and returned a punt through heavy traffic down the right sideline in the third quarter.

"I wasn't really expecting to score" on the punt return, he said. "Everyone picked off everyone and I just took it the whole way. I think that's the best I've ever returned a punt in my life."

The only score for Magruder (1-1) came late in the third quarter when Charles MacFarland recovered a fumble and returned it 34 yards.

Springbrook's Jason Petty closed the scoring by rushing one yard for a touchdown with nine minutes left in the game.
