Potomac's defense limited Woodbridge to seven yards in the second half and its offense came up with the big plays when necessary, as the Panthers came away with a hard-fought, 12-6 Commonwealth District victory last night before an overflow crowd at Potomac.

Potomac (4-0 overall, 3-0 in the district) dominated time of possession in the second half by running 29 plays to 15 for Woodbridge (2-2, 2-1). In the second half running back John Newsom carried 11 times for 53 yards and quarterback Gilbert Telleria 11 times for 54 yards.

Woodbridge's deepest penetration in the second half was the Potomac 37. Still, with 1:47 left in the game, the Vikings had a final shot from their 20.

But Woodbridge took its time in the huddle and at the line of scrimmage as the clock ran. When the ball was snapped there was 1:18 left and the play broke down.

Quarterback Paul Harris rolled left and looked for a receiver. But he was sacked, fumbled and the ball squirted through the end zone for a safety. Potomac recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.

"Going into the season we said that the defense was the backbone of our football team," said Potomac Coach Bill Brown. "And we have now played with immense pressure on our defense in all four games.

"I'm happy that we have Stonewall {Jackson}, Woodbridge and Gar-Field behind us. Not that we don't have tough games ahead, but we beat three good football teams."

Potomac got started quickly as Wilson Kennedy took the opening kickoff 68 yards to the Vikings 21. Potomac ran five plays before Sal Colangelo kicked a 26-yard field goal.

The Panthers took over on downs late in the quarter at their 36. Newsom had an 18-yard run and Telleria a 25-yard option in the 64-yard touchdown drive that Newsom finished with a three-yard run.

Woodbridge's only touchdown came after the ensuing kickoff. Anthony Carter returned the kick 31 yards to the Potomac 45. Carter had four carries for 34 yards in the drive and he scored from three yards. In the first half Carter carried 14 times for 59 yards but had only two carries for 13 yards in the second.
