BAR SCENE: Patriots WR Hart Lee Dykes was hospitalized with an eye injury after he and teammate Irving Fryar said they were assaulted at a nightclub.
Dykes was listed in satisfactory condition last night.
Police responded to a call of a large disturbance outside the Club Shalimar in Providence, R.I., around 1:20 a.m. Wednesday, said Lt. Steven Hall.
Witnesses told police Fryar ran to his car, got a handgun and returned to the scene, where he pointed it at people who "scattered and fled in all directions."
Fryar, who required stitches to close a gash on his head, was charged with carrying a gun without a permit, a felony. Capt. Bernard Gannon said Fryar has a Massachusetts gun permit, but it is not valid in Rhode Island.
RUMOR MILL: The 49ers denied they are trying to make a trade with the Raiders for RB Marcus Allen.
Responding to a report in the National that said Allen would be traded for a No. 1 draft pick or a Pro Bowl-type player, 49ers official John McVay said the reports were false. The status of RB Roger Craig, who injured his knee Sunday, remained uncertain.
MOVES: The Browns waived veteran RB Barry Redden, assigned rookie WR Eugene Rowell to the practice squad and signed free agent QB Jeff Francis to the practice squad. DE Charles Freeman was released from the practice squad. . . . Bills FS Mark Kelso was placed on IR and free agent NT Gary Baldinger was signed.
