Chris Hakel completed 21 of 26 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns as William and Mary held off Virginia Military Institute, 59-47, in the 44th annual Oyster Bowl yesterday in Norfolk.
The Tribe (4-2) scored 42 second-half points to pull away from a 17-17 tie.
The Keydets' Tony Scales threw for four touchdowns and 323 yards. Scales's 25-yard pass to Dan Lyle with 1:15 left in the game cut the Keydets' deficit to 53-47. But Tribe fullback Tyrone Shelton scored on a one-yard plunge with 51 seconds remaining.
Virginia Military (2-4) took a 14-10 lead after one period on the strength of a 67-yard bomb from Scales to Lyle, a 14-yard run by Scales and a 23-yard field goal by Wade Hawkins.
Robert Green gained 163 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries to lead William and Mary. Shelton rushed for 126 yards on 21 carries.
Lyle caught four passes for 163 yards for the Keydets.
