John R. Francis Field, new home of George Washington's soccer and baseball teams, will be dedicated today at halftime of the Colonials' 2 p.m. soccer game against Temple.

The field at 25th and M streets NW is a half-mile from GW's main campus. The university is spending about $500,000 for improvements on the District-owned site and will maintain it year-round. . . .

Maryland volleyball coach Janice Kruger goes for her 400th career win tonight at home against GW. The Colonials' first-year coach, Susie Homan, assisted Kruger at Maryland and Nebraska-Omaha. . . .

The Maryland men's basketball team will play four preseason intrasquad games around the state, the second year Coach Gary Williams has taken scrimmages on the road:

Oct. 31 at Western Maryland College in Westminster; Nov. 8, Woodlawn High School in Baltimore; Nov. 16, Queen Annes County High, Centreville; Nov. 20, Largo High. All at 7:30 . . .

Southern Cal Coach Larry Smith angrily defended his decision not to suspend three freshmen charged with misdemeanors in an alleged sexual assault.

"I'm not suspending people for something that really has nothing to do with playing the season," he said. "If you suspend a person, you're saying, 'You're guilty.' I don't think you can do that."

Willie McGinest, Jason Oliver and Michael Jones were charged Monday in an alleged July 20 incident at a campus dormitory. A graduate student, 23, who was a peer counselor in a summer college introduction program the three took her to a room and mistreated her. . . .

Jerry Stovall, the former LSU football coach, tentatively has been named athletic director at Louisiana Tech, effective Nov. 1. He steps into a hot spot.

Tulsa Athletic Director Rick Dickson plans to cancel 1991 and '92 football games against Louisiana Tech because of a melee Saturday for which 10 players, six from Tech (which won, 35-21), were ejected -- the third major fight for Louisiana Tech in its past 11 games.
