Second-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain picked up his second victory in the Yellow Group by beating Finland's Aki Rahunen, 6-4, 6-3.

American David Wheaton beat Mark Kratzmann of Australia, 6-4, 6-2, for his second Yellow Group victory. Third-seeded Michael Chang beat fellow American Brad Pearce, 7-5, 6-4, for his second win in the Gold Group.

John McEnroe had more trouble than expected, but defeated unseeded Udo Riglewski of Germany in three sets to reach the quarterfinals of the ATP CA Trophy tournament in Vienna, Austria.

McEnroe, the second seed, won, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3, to become the final member of the quarterfinal field. He now will meet Sweden's Anders Jarryd.
