Sidwell Friends defeated Independent School League volleyball rival Georgetown Day in straight games last week to run its season record to 8-0. The Quakers have a 26-match winning streak and a four-year mark of 65-3.

In beating the league's second-best team, the Quakers moved within a match of gaining at least a share of the league title. Coached by Sheila Weaver, the three-time defending ISL champions play National Cathedral today and finish out the regular season next week against Maret. In the Running

Centennial's Pat Rodrigues and Amanda Cox, the defending Maryland State 3A cross-country champions, will be the runners to catch in the Howard County championships Thursday at Howard County Community College.

The Oakland Mills boys team dominated the cross-country circuit in the '80s, winning the 3A state title seven consecutive years. Defending 2A state champion Atholton is the favorite for the girls title.

Rodrigues got a good warm-up Saturday, finishing third (15 minutes 59 seconds) behind Denbigh's John Oliver and Georgetown Prep's Jama Bile in the 20th annual Georgetown Prep Cross-County Classic. . . .

The Virginia AAA Northern Region district boys and girls cross-country championships will be held this week at Burke Lake Park. The Great Falls and Potomac District finals will be Wednesday, the Gunston District meet is Thursday. The region championships are Nov. 1 at Burke Lake Park. . . .

Central's Troy Townsend has been wearing out two different sets of shoes for the Falcons this fall. The junior plays on the special teams unit for the football team and runs cross-country.

Despite not working out for a week, he placed 13th in a field of 45 runners at a meet last week. Townsend's twin brother, LeRoy, also plays for the football team. In the winter, the brothers are members of the Falcons wrestling team. Wootten Honored

DeMatha basketball coach Morgan Wootten was named the Outstanding Sports Coach of 1990 by the Walt Disney Co. Wootten was among 36 coaches and teachers honored last week. The Disney Channel will air the ceremony Nov. 4.

Former Los Angeles Lakers coach Pat Riley presented the award to Wootten, who has a 929-132 record in his 34 years at the Hyattsville private school. He ranks fifth in high school coaching victories, and his .875 winning percentage is believed to be best in history. The history teacher also was football coach (79-40-2) for 12 seasons and assistant baseball coach. . . .

DeMatha's baseball team is sponsoring a baseball card show Saturday in the school cafeteria from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The team is trying to raise funds for a trip to the Florida Coast League Tournament in March. Respecting the Elders

Arundel sophomore Gary Carpenter won the Anne Arundel County golf championship with a score of 78 at Eisenhower Golf Course in Crownsville, Md.

Carpenter finished five strokes ahead of Broadneck senior Steve Fineran. Severna Park senior Pete Regala was third at 85. . . .

Northeast quarterback Derek Dolch wears number 15, the same number worn by his father and his uncle at the Anne Arundel County school. Ed Dolch played quarterback and graduated from Northeast in 1968. Uncle Dave Dolch, also a quarterback, graduated in 1973.

Dave Dolch is now head coach at Morningside College in Iowa. Previously he was the coach at Bowie State, where he is credited with rebuilding the program, including breaking a four-year, 35-game losing streak.

Cardozo and Coolidge High Schools will travel to Sacramento, Calif., again as part of the national cultural exchange program. Ben Franklin of Philadelphia, Dunbar of Baltimore and Cambridge and Rindge Latin (Mass.) also will participate in the eight-team basketball tournament Dec. 17-23. Cardozo Coach Henry Lindsey is seeking donations to help offset the cost of the trip. . . .
