Grumpy Yankee and Goldies Yankee teamed up in the 10th race at Rosecroft Raceway last night to produce the largest exacta payoff in the track's 42-year history.
Grumpy Yankee won the race at odds of 197 to 1; Goldies Yankee finished second, 4 1/2 lengths back, at odds of 5 to 1. The 9-3 exacta returned $3,675. The previous mark was $3,493.20, set by Chem's Valentine and Mandy Crain on May 27, 1974.
In exacta wagering a bettor must correctly select the exact order of finish of the top two horses.
According to Rosecroft officials, only $8 was wagered on the winning 9-3 combination. It could not be determined how many individuals shared in the record payoff.
Grumpy Yankee's $2 win payoff of $396.00 was a high for the year but was short of the Rosecroft record of $445.40 set by Oxford Kyle in 1986.
Gelding Grumpy Yankee earned his victory. The 4-year-old trotter was parked most of the mile before clearing to the lead at the three-quarters pole. It was the second career victory for driver Brett Bittle.
Playing a significant role in the the large mutuels was favorite Mahogany Isle, which broke stride at the start of the race for claiming trotters.
