American Legion Award -- Billy Muhlenfeld, 1989 graduate of Gaithersburg High School, has been named legion's player of year for Maryland. Muhlenfeld, a pitcher for Gaithersburg Post 295, finished 10-0 this summer.


Virginia -- Sophomore C Ted Jeffries of Bowie had 27 points and 16 rebounds to lead Orange team to 98-93 victory over Blue team in annual basketball game at University Hall. Senior G John Crotty scored game-high 33 points for Blue team. Actor Woody Harrelson was celebrity coach of Orange team, while Blue team's celebrity coach was Grammy Award-winning musician Bruce Hornsby.

South Atlantic Conference -- Named American University field hockey coach Anne Wilkinson coach of the year. Senior MF Cheryl Boehringer of William and Mary is player of the year.

Jimmy Segala, former Gallaudet quarterback, has been named male deaf athlete of the year by Colorado Amateur Sports Corp. Segala, a 1989 Gallaudet graduate, was a four-year starter for the Bison, guiding them to Atlantic Collegiate Football Conference championships in 1988 and 1989.
