COLLEGES

Maryland -- The field hockey team has been extended an at-large bid to play in the NCAA tournament. Maryland (11-5-2) will play at Temple on Wednesday at 2 p.m.; the winner plays Penn State at State College on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Mary Washington -- Women's volleyball team (29-6) has won 21 of its last 22 matches and will play in the NCAA Division III playoffs, Nov. 8-10 in Huntingdon, Pa.

Navy -- Water polo team (21-5) won the Mid-Atlantic Tournament for the fifth straight year. Luis Nicolao, who had 15 goals in the tournament, was named most valuable player for the second straight year. The Midshipmen are seeded second behind Brown in the Eastern Championships, which begin Saturday at 9 a.m. at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis.

Florida State -- LB Kirk Carruthers has been suspended from football team for "violating team training rules," Coach Bobby Bowden said. He'll return Nov. 17.

World Boxing Council -- Top-rated challenger Pedro Decima stopped Paul Banke at 2:35 of the fourth round to win the super bantamweight title in Inglewood, Calif.
