Texas -- Football coach David McWilliams will be offered a five-year contract after the season, Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds said. McWilliams's Longhorns moved into the top 10 for first time in seven years this week.

George Washington -- Andrew Morrison, Rod Gee and Werner Dasbach (Bethesda-Chevy Chase) were named to Atlantic 10 academic all-conference men's soccer team.

Maryland-Baltimore County -- Announced resignation of men's soccer coach John Ellinger. Ellinger, former Washington Diplomats head coach, recently was promoted within Montgomery County school system. Ellinger's record in 10 years at UMBC was 80-93-16.

Washington -- Greg Lewis, the Pacific-10 Conference's leading rusher, has had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and will miss Apple Cup game against Washington State, Huskies Coach Don James said.

Connecticut -- Named Jeffrey Hathaway, 31, assistant director of athletics at Maryland since 1986, senior associate director of athletics.


Signing -- F John Kerr Jr., from Falls Church High School and Duke, signed one-year deal with Boulogne of French Third Division.


San Francisco Giants -- Added P Jim Myers, Cs Craig Colbert and Scooter Tucker to 40-man roster.


World Top Four Tournament -- Irina Smirnova and Elena Batukhtina led the Soviet Union over China, 14-16, 15-3, 15-5, 15-5, in final of tournament in Tokyo. For third place, Japan beat United States, 8-15, 15-9, 13-15, 15-5, 15-12.
