Virginia -- Four football players were extended invitations to play in bowl games. QB Shawn Moore, TE Bruce McGonnigal were invited to play in Japan Bowl Jan. 12 and in Hula Bowl Jan. 19. C Trevor Ryals was invited to Hula Bowl and CB Tony Covington to Japan Bowl. Also, four Cavaliers field hockey players received postseason recognition. Senior cocaptains Andy Begel and Heather Christman were named to compete in North-South senior games at Rutgers today and Sunday. Begel and Christman also were named to first-team South Region all-American squad, along with forward Heather Goehringer. First-year F Kelly Daddona was named to second-team South Region squad.

Georgetown -- Simone Kollman was named to all-Big East volleyball team.

Montgomery-Rockville -- Dave Gallant scored at 50:15 to lift the Knights to 2-1 victory over Ulster (Stoneridge, N.Y.) in consolation round of national junior college soccer championships in Trenton, N.J. Montgomery-Rockville, now 19-2-1, will play Lees-McRae (Banner Elk, N.C.) today at 10 a.m.

Connecticut -- Basketball coach Jim Calhoun agreed to four-year contract.


U.S. National Team -- Will play exhibition in Portugal Dec. 19 in its 22nd and final international game of year. Team will play Trinidad and Tobago Sunday in Port-of-Spain and Soviet Union Wednesday, also in Port-of-Spain.


Colleges -- It was reported in Friday's editions that Indiana University F Ken Snow had been named winner of Hermann Trophy (nation's outstanding soccer player) for second year in a row. Virginia's Tony Meola won the award last year, Snow in 1988. And East Tennessee State is a member of the Southern Conference, not the Ohio Valley Conference.
