The Washington Redskins will be playing only their fifth Thanksgiving Day game on Thursday when they're at Texas Stadium to meet the Dallas Cowboys. They're 1-3 on Thanksgiving, having lost three times in Dallas, winning in Detroit in 1973.

The Redskins lost to Dallas in 1968, 1974 and 1978. The 1974 game was one of the most memorable of the Cowboys-Redskins series. The Redskins knocked out Roger Staubach and had a 16-3 lead when backup quarterback Clint Longley came off the bench to throw two touchdown passes.

His last one was a 50-yarder to Drew Pearson with 28 seconds remaining, and it rallied the Cowboys to a 24-23 victory. That was Longley's first and last ripple in pro football. Big Running Day Delay

Earnest Byner's 116-yard rushing game was the first performance over 100 yards by a Redskins player since Week 5 last season and it was the first against the Saints since Week 2 last season. Byner already has rushed for 565 yards and needs 15 more to match his total for last season. That would be his best since gaining 1,002 for the Cleveland Browns in 1985.. . .

This is the seventh straight game the Redskins have played a team coming off a victory. . . . They're now second to the 49ers in total offense; they finished second to the 49ers last season. . . .

Gary Clark had eight catches against the Saints and needs just two to tie Bobby Mitchell for fourth place on the Redskins' career receiving list at 393. He's fifth in the NFC in catches (51) and yards (785). . . .

After making one of 13 third-down conversions against the Eagles, the Redskins were 11 for 15 against the Saints. . . . In 24 career games, Rypien has thrown for four touchdowns four times. In his last nine games, he has thrown 16 touchdown passes and four interceptions.
