Pat Day -- The jockey won his 5,000th race in the feature at Churchill Downs to become the 12th to reach the milestone. In the $100,000 Falls City Handicap -- for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles -- Day was aboard Screen Prospect, who paid $5.80.

BOXING

World Lightweight Championship -- American Pernell Whitaker (25-1) retained his title with a unanimous decision over Benji Marquez of Puerto Rico in Madrid. Earlier, Robert Daniels held onto his WBC cruiserweight crown by fighting to a draw with former champion Taoufik Belbouli.

GOLF

World Cup -- Britain's Richard Boxall and Mark James hold a one-stroke lead at 12-under 276 midway through the 72-hole, $1.1 million event in Orlando, Fla. Boxall shot a 69 -- 137, James a 71 -- 139. Spaniards Jose Rivero (67) and Miguel Angel Jimenez (73) are at 277; the U.S. team of Payne Stewart (68) and Jodie Mudd (72) is third at 278.
