WEST POTOMAC ON FIRE: West Potomac, which defeated Hayfield earlier in the season, 14-7, knew the rematch in the Virginia AAA Northern Region Division 5 final would be just as tough. Friday's game was scoreless until the Wolverines turned a botched field goal attempt into a 6-0 lead with 20 seconds left in the first half. On a 20-yard field goal attempt, holder Shawn Freeman couldn't handle the snap, but picked up the ball and threw to end Derone Brown in the end zone for a touchdown.
"If I don't think I can get the ball down for the kick, I'm supposed to yell, 'Fire,' " said Freeman, whose play sparked West Potomac to a 21-0 victory. "I wanted to run it, but I saw Derone come open in front of me so I threw it."
SKIP AND CHASE: In the Interhigh League championship game at Howard's Greene Stadium, Wilson's Eric Granton went back to punt with just 33 seconds remaining in the first half and his team leading, 6-0. The snap was low and skipped past Granton, who chase it and picked it up. Eastern's George Stewart got to Granton and knocked the ball loose. Eastern's Broadus Smith picked up the fumble and raced 14 yards for a touchdown and a tie at 6.
The Ramblers outplayed Wilson in the second half and scored in the last period for a 12-6 victory.
"That was a big play. It gave us some momentum for the second half," Eastern Coach James Fields said.
Wilson Coach Horace Fleming said the play was the turning point. "We never recovered," he said.
