BALTIMORE, NOV. 27 -- Senior guard Derrick Reid hit a off-balance 18-foot shot at the buzzer to give the University of Maryland-Baltimore County a 75-73 victory over Howard tonight.

After the Retrievers (1-1) called back-to-back timeouts with 16 seconds left, Reid got a pass low on the right baseline and shot as Howard was in a zone defense for the first time in the game.

"I was surprised that Howard was in the zone," said Reid. "The play Coach {Earl Hawkins} called was inside to Jimmy {Frantz}, but I was open and hit it."

After trailing by 19 points early in the second half, Howard (0-3) got back into the game because of the play of forward Keith Kirven. He scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the second half.

The Retrievers used a 20-4 run over the last 3:35 of the first half and first 6:45 of the second to take a 58-37 lead. Howard then started a 28-10 scoring spurt over the next 10:09 to trail by 68-67 after Kirven's basket with 3:04 left.

A basket by Frantz with 35 seconds left gave the Retrievers a 73-70 lead. Howard forward Julius McNeil sank a three-point shot with 16 seconds left to tie it, and UMBC called time out.

"We were never able to get over the hump . . . We have not put two halves of good defense together yet," said Howard Coach Butch Beard.
