BASEBALL Kansas City Royals -- George Brett, who began season in deep slump but went on to win AL batting title (.329), was named team's player of year for seventh time in his career. Chicago Cubs -- Reached agreement on a one-year contract with LHP Paul Assenmacher. Terms were not available. Last season Assenmacher was 7-2 with 2.80 ERA and career-high 10 saves in 74 games.
BASKETBALL CBA Record -- Albany Patroons set league record for longest winning streak at start of a season by beating visiting Grand Rapid Hoops, 96-84, Thursday night for 12th straight victory. Patroons, who feature former Maryland star Albert King, also hold record for league's longest win streak -- 19 games.
GOLF Seniors Challenge -- George Archer shot 3-under-par 69 to take lead after two rounds of fourth annual tournament in Princeville, Hawaii. His 36-hole score of 5-under-par 139 was one shot better than defending champion Dale Douglass.
COLLEGES Maryland -- Terrapins lost to Texas, 15-3, 15-5, 15-7, in first round of women's NCAA volleyball tournament in Austin, Tex. Maryland, which completed its season 22-12, was making its first appearance in tournament. Maryland will host semifinals and championship game, Dec. 13 and Dec. 15. Tickets are available on campus. Mary Washington -- Senior MF Todd Williams of Annandale, sophomore F Tony Trepal of Springfield were named to men's soccer Division III all-South Region second team.
HIGH SCHOOLS Streak Ends -- Barton High School's football winning streak ended at 63 games when it lost to Rison, 27-20, in final of Class A Arkansas playoffs in Little Rock. Barton became team with longest winning streak in country when Animas (N.M.) lost to Lordsburg (N.M.) Oct. 26, ending 69-game streak.
