Seven-foot center Shawn Fergus had 27 points and 10 rebounds to lead Cleveland State to a 106-98 victory over Navy last night in the consolation game of the Mazda Gator Bowl Tip-Off tournament in Jacksonville, Fla. Navy, which lost Friday at the buzzer to Jacksonville, 84-82, fell to 1-3. Cleveland State, which lost to Colorado State, 91-88, in the first round, improved to 3-2.

Cleveland State took a 70-57 halftime lead as the Vikings shot 72.2 percent (26 of 36) from the field in the first half. Anthony Reed scored 21 points and Fergus 19 points in the first half.

Navy closed to 100-95 with 48 seconds left on a three-point shot by John Haase. Navy had a school record 45 three-point attempts, making 13. Erik Harris and Haase each made three. Harris had a career-high 27 points and Eddie Reddick, with 14 points, topped 1,000 in his career (1,004).

Navy was outrebounded, 52-39, but the most telling statistic was from the floor shooting: 58.5 percent (38 for 65) for Cleveland State to 40.9 (38 for 93) for the Midshipmen.

Towson State 62, Loyola (Md.) 60:

Larry Brown hit four free throws in the final 1:12, including the game winners with 14 seconds left, as Towson State (2-2) won at home to repeat its Baltimore Beltway Classic championship.

The Tigers led by 35-23 at halftime, but Loyola's 10-0 run tied it at 44 with 10:07 left. Over the next eight minutes each basket either tied the game or changed the lead.

Kevin Green led Loyola (2-2) with 24. Devin Boyd (18) led Towson.

In the consolation game, Alex Watson scored 13 points and had a tournament-record 12 assists as Mount St. Mary's (1-3) beat Maryland-Baltimore County, 97-81.

Hobart 69, Catholic 62:

Hobart outscored Catholic 17-4 in the last 4:12 in the second round of the Coca-Cola Eastern Invitational at Catholic. Catholic sophomore guard Mike Connelly led all scorers with 29 points, 20 in the first half. Junior Mike Kiefer led Hobart with 16 points.

Led bu Bernard Johnson's 17 points, Mary Washington dominated St. Joseph's (N.Y.) in a consolation-round game, 107-75.

RIT 90, Gallaudet 78:

Rochester Institute of Technology (1-2) was led by Randy Knightner (22 points). Host Gallaudet (2-2) was led by Anthony Jones, who hit four of nine three-point shots and a game-high 27 points, followed by Ed Hagwood (25).

Old Dominion 95, Md-Eastern Shore 70:

Keith Jackson scored 26 points and Chris Gatling added 23 points and 15 rebounds as the Monarchs (2-2) started the game with an 11-0 run and never trailed.

Leland Kent and Darrick Purnell led UMES (1-3) with 14 points and six rebounds apiece.

Frederick CC 116, Mont-Rockville 102:

Frederick (5-4) had six players in double figures, led by Craig Collins (26 points) and Buster Jones (23). The host Knights (2-2) were led by Doug Whalen's 25 points.

Capitol College 84, Polytechnic Institute (N.Y.) 55:

In the St. Mary's College Rotary Classic consolation, the Chargers (4-3) were led by Shane Smith's tournament-record 38 points. Chris Dixon had 18 points and 22 rebounds.

Mont-Takoma 82, Charles 80:

Kenny Diggs's layup with four seconds left lifted the Falcons (2-0) by host Charles County (0-4). Diggs had a game-high 31 points, plus 14 rebounds.

Columbia Union 82, Wilmington College 77:

Jim Dabrowski and Craig Nelson scored 17 each to pace the winners in Wilmington, N.C.

Fayetteville St. 73, Bowie St. 60:

Travis Spells scored 14 and Philip Hart 13 for Fayetteville (4-2). Aquila Matthews led Bowie with 15 points (2-4).

St. Paul's 86, UDC 79:

Henry Moter's 20 points included six three-pointers for the Firebirds, but it wasn't enough against the Tigers.
