REBELS RUNNIN': Top-ranked Nevada-Las Vegas opened its season in Vancouver Saturday night by beating Alabama-Birmingham, 109-68, with the Rebels' Larry Johnson scoring 26 points. Stacey Augmon, who finished with 19, started the Rebels' 18-point run with a dunk, and UNLV had a 25-6 lead in eight minutes.
BULL'S-EYE: Mark Baker made good on 12 of 12 free throws to help 11th-ranked Ohio State stomp Youngstown, 112-67. He scored 24 points as the Buckeyes (3-0) broke 100 points for the third straight game, a school record. Perry Carter helped Ohio State's cause by making 10 of 11 shots from the floor for 20 points, and teammate Jim Jackson had 13 points and nine assists.
ADVANTAGE, HOOSIERS: Indiana rebounded its way to a 72-52 victory over Louisville, taking advantage of the error-prone Cardinals (0-1) at the Big Four Classic in Indianapolis.
"We knew they like to go to the offensive boards, and we just figured we'd block them out and we'd be fine," said Indiana's Calbert Cheaney, who scored 19 points and six rebounds.
The Hoosiers (4-1) outrebounded the Cardinals, 34-29 -- the first time this season they have outrebounded a rival. They outshot Louisville, 56 percent to 39, and scored 22 points off Cardinals turnovers.
TRADITION: Richmond claimed its fourth victory in five years over Georgia Tech in a 73-71 cliffhanger featuring Jim Springer's rebound and game-deciding layup with three seconds left. Richmond (2-1) made a school-record 12 three-pointers with Chris Fleming, who scored 24 points, hitting eight.
AREA: Bryant Stith and John Crotty keyed a tough Virginia offense in its convincing 93-47 victory over Winthrop. Stith finished with 17 and Crotty 13 for the Cavaliers (3-2).
