Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs has been impressed with the performance of new punter Kelly Goodburn, signed Tuesday to replace Ralf Mojsiejenko.
"He's very quick and he gets the ball up high," Gibbs said. "He's had impressive practices."
It was an impressive tryout Tuesday that enabled the Redskins to cut Mojsiejenko, who had performed well in practice but struggled in games. After averaging 43 yards per punt last season, Mojsiejenko dropped off to 39.2 this year.
Goodburn, released by the Kansas City Chiefs after three games this season, has a career average of 40.2 yards and was third in the NFL last season with 25 punts inside the 20.
Guard Russ Grimm (sprained shoulder) and H-back Jimmie Johnson (pinched nerve) didn't practice yesterday. Quarterback Stan Humphries, who has been on injured reserve with a knee injury since Nov. 14, continued throwing lightly on the other practice field. . . .
The Chicago Bears are the Redskins' ninth straight opponent coming off a win. The last team the Redskins played that lost the week before is the Phoenix Cardinals, in Week 4. The Bears beat the Detroit Lions, 23-17, in overtime last week. . . .
Wide receiver Gary Clark needs 73 yards to pass the 1,000-yard mark for the fourth time in five years. Clark -- who has 62 catches for 927 yards -- already has tied the club record with his sixth straight season with 50 or more catches. He shares the mark with Bobby Mitchell, who achieved the feat from 1963 to 1968. . . .
The Redskins want fans to remember that Sunday's game will begin at 4, not 1, which is the time listed on the ticket. The time was changed to accommodate CBS. The club also urges fans to bring a toy for its annual "Toys For Tots" campaign. The Redskins collected 18,000 toys last year.
