KNOXVILLE, TENN., DEC. 9 -- Sixth-ranked Tennessee held off a late Maryland surge today and defeated the Terrapins, 82-71, in a women's basketball game at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Tennessee (3-2) built a 40-22 halftime lead as 23rd-ranked Maryland (4-3) committed 24 first-half turnovers and 37 overall.

The Terrapins surged in the second half with the help of Jessie Hicks, who made 12 of 13 field goals and had 26 points.

Hicks has made 22 of her last 23 field goal attempts over two games. MARYLAND (71)
