Gaithersburg started with an 11-2 run and opened the second half with a 13-2 spurt and defeated visiting Einstein, 56-47, last night in a nonleague girls basketball game at Gaithersburg High School.

"That's the first time I've seen us start quickly," said Gaithersburg Coach Tim Kowalchick, whose team improved to 2-1. "At halftime too we went over a few things I expected of them and I think they came out with more intensity in the second half. We were ready to go."

The Trojans used their height advantage to build the early lead. Adrienne Beard scored six of her 13 points in the opening minutes, all on layups or follows after offensive rebounds.

Melissa Simpson (13 points) and Elicia Paisley accounted for 15 of the team's 17 third-quarter points. With Simpson hitting from the outside and Paisley controlling the middle, Gaithersburg stretched a two-point halftime lead to 13 entering the fourth quarter.

"We're a team that needs to be able to run to score," Einstein Coach Patti Langworthy said. "But they were breaking our press pretty well.

"Then, after halftime, we hit another stretch where we just fell down on defense."

The Titans (1-1) battled back each time. They scored six consecutive points to close the first quarter and rode Mary Sheridan's hot hand in the second. Sheridan scored 13 of the team's 15 second-quarter points, including seven of nine from the free throw line. Sheridan finished with a game-high 17 points but fouled out early in the fourth quarter.

The Titans' free throw shooting kept them in the game. They finished 19 for 23 from the line.

Beard, Paisley (12 points) and Noell White (11 points) dominated inside for the Trojans.

"We did have the height on them and some athleticism, I think," Kowalchick said. "They outhustled us, especially in the first half. We ran up 11-2 and they came back and tied it up strictly on hustle."
