The Carroll Lions used a tenacious defense and pinpoint shooting last night to drub visiting Anacostia, 77-55, in a nonleague boys basketball game.

Forward Dewayne Johnson, who had a game-high 28 points, sparked Carroll on a 14-2 scoring run, getting eight of those points on gliding jumpshots and swooping layups as the Lions took a 32-21 halftime lead.

"We were due for a win," Lions Coach Carroll Holmes said. "We wanted to come in and just play tough defense. If we play tough defense we're going to score points."

Carroll (1-2) continued its scoring barrage early in the third quarter, upping its lead to 12 points behind the play of forward George McDaniels, who danced through heavy traffic in the lane on a double-clutch layup to make the score 41-29. He finished with 12 points.

After Anacostia's Keith Brannon scored to make it 41-31, McDaniels answered with a five-foot baseline jumper, putting the lead back at 12.

The Indians (1-1) managed to carve Carroll's margin to eight early in the third quarter, but their shooting doldrums resurfaced in the final period, allowing the Lions to build a 57-38 lead.

"There are no Lawrence Motens or Charles Harrisons this year," said Holmes, referring to last year's star players.

"We can't rely on {one person} to score. It had to be distributed."

Contributing in large part to the Lions' second-half onslaught was their switching from a full-court press to man-to-man.

"We switched because we play man-to-man better," Holmes said. "We match up better in that defense."

The Lions increased their lead to 64-42 with authoritative rebounding from forward Larry Tharpe, who caused the Indians to alter easy shots. He had a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Lions had a bit of a scare when starting point guard Lester Lewis fell to the floor after passing the ball. He had leg cramps and returned to the game moments later.
