With tackle Ed Simmons scheduled to undergo knee surgery today, the Redskins yesterday signed offensive lineman Scott Beavers, a rookie from Georgia Tech who was waived last week by the Broncos.

Beavers, 6 feet 4, 277 pounds, has had a year typical of most players fighting to get in the NFL door. He made the Broncos as a free agent but was cut Oct. 18. He was re-signed for their practice squad Oct. 23, activated Dec. 1 and in uniform for their game against the Raiders Dec. 2. However, he was cut before last week's game against the Chiefs, when the Broncos activated running back Steve Sewell from injured reserve.

Although Mark May and Ray Brown might have been able to play despite injuries, the Redskins do not want to use one of their two remaining free moves from the injured list. And both were hurt last week in practice.

May, who has been rehabilitating a knee, bruised a leg. Brown, who had a knee injury, broke a hand.

Long Time, No Play

Saturday's game will be the first between the Redskins and Patriots since September 1984. The Redskins have gone longer between games against only the Chiefs, whom they have not played since 1983. . . .

New England's roster includes 11 players who were in uniform for the 1984 game; Washington's has nine. Eight of the nine Redskins were starters that day, and seven of those eight -- Jeff Bostic, Darryl Grant, Darrell Green, Joe Jacoby, Charles Mann, Art Monk, Don Warren -- are scheduled to start Saturday. Russ Grimm may start Saturday. Monte Coleman is the other Redskin who remains from 1984. . . .

The Patriots have not defeated an NFC East team in 14 tries since Oct. 8, 1978, when they beat Philadelphia. They have not defeated an NFC team in six tries since Dec. 11, 1988, when they defeated Tampa Bay in overtime. . . . New England is the first team in 10 weeks to enter its game against the Redskins with a loss in its previous game. . . .

Redskins wide receiver Gary Clark has 68 receptions for 1,012 yards this season, leaving him 11 receptions and 253 yards short of his career bests. He had 79 receptions last season and gained 1,265 yards receiving in 1986.
