COLLEGES Georgetown -- G Joey Brown was named Big East rookie of the week. He had eight points and nine assists in a victory over St. Leo and 14 points and three assists in a loss to Texas-El Paso. George Washington -- G Alvin Pearsall was named Atlantic 10 rookie of the week for his eight-point, nine-assist performance in a victory over UMBC. Miami -- RB Leonard Conley, suspended for the final two regular season games, has been reinstated and will play against Texas in the Cotton Bowl. He was suspended for fighting with DB Carl Richardson and then arguing with a coach.
HOCKEY Izvestia Tournament -- Dave Latta scored the go-ahead goal with four minutes left in the second period to lead Canada past Czechoslovakia, 4-1, in the opening game of the international event in Moscow. In the second game, the Soviet Union beat Sweden, 5-1.
GOLF Australian Masters -- Jane Geddes beat Kristal Parker in a sudden-death playoff to win the tournament in Palm Meadows. Geddes birdied the last three holes to force the playoff, then birdied the par-5 18th to take the tournament after Parker's second shot dropped into a water hazard. Geddes, a former U.S. and British Open champion, ended an 18-month winless streak, and joined an elite group to win tournaments on four continents.
