MINERS' GOLD: Texas-El Paso stunned No. 5 Georgetown, 71-60, as Johnny Melvin led the Miners with 14 points and Parkdale High School graduate Henry Hall had 12 points. It was the Hoyas' first nonconference home loss since falling to American, 63-62, in 1982.
LOCAL WOES: George Mason lost its home opener to No. 24 East Tennesse State, 96-86, as Keith Jennings scored 29 points. It was the Patriots' second loss to the Buccaneers this season.
No. 8 Ohio State shot 58 percent from the field and buried American, 109-73. The Eagles shot 35 percent from the field. Malik Sealy scored 23 points to lead 14th-ranked St. John's over Howard, 78-65.
SOONERS SOAR: Brent Price scored 56 points, the second-most in Oklahoma history, to lead the No. 13 Sooners to a 172-112 thrashing of Loyola Marymount. Price, a junior who sat out last season after transferring from South Carolina, made a Big Eight-record 11 three-pointers in scoring the most points in Lloyd Noble Arena history.
Wayman Tisdale holds the school record with 61 points, scored at a tournament in Oklahoma City in 1984. The 172 points were the most this season by the Sooners and one short of the school record set in a victory over U.S. International last year.
REBEL ROLL: Larry Johnson scored nine of his 35 points in a second-half burst to lead No. 1 UNLV over No. 21 Michigan State, 95-75. Michigan State opened the second half with an 18-9 spurt to take a 60-59 lead with 13:26 remaining. But the Runnin' Rebels outscored the Spartans by 20-6 over the next 8:07.
CLOSE CALL: Darrick Martin sank a pair of free throws with 4.6 seconds left, leading No. 6 UCLA over DePaul, 92-90. Donald Hodge scored 22 points and Mark Macon scored 21 as Temple defeated No. 23 Georgia Tech, 69-67.
Henry Williams scored 31 points, making six of 11 three-pointers, and North Carolina-Charlotte upset Clemson, 103-100. Kenny Brooks drove the length of the floor for a layup at the buzzer to lift James Madison over Mount St. Mary's, 72-71.
ROUT CITY: Pete Chilcutt scored a career-high 22 points and George Lynch added 20 as No. 9 North Carolina handed Alabama its third straight loss, 95-79. Richie Farmer and John Pelphrey each scored 17 points to lead No. 18 Kentucky over Tennessee-Chattanooga, 86-70.
