FIGHTING TIGER: Louisiana State Coach Dale Brown has lashed out at the Denver Nuggets for what he called insensitive handling of struggling rookie G Chris Jackson. Brown's outburst, in an interview with the Rocky Mountain News, was directed at Nuggets GM Bernie Bickerstaff, who instructed Jackson, the club's No. 1 draftee from LSU, to "stop griping, and work and play basketball."

Brown, who coached Jackson two years, said, "If he {Bickerstaff} wants to destroy Chris Jackson, all he has to do is keep putting statements like that in the newspapers. That shows right there that there's a lack of sensitivity. You don't have to be a Rhodes scholar to understand you don't talk like that to someone afflicted with a neurological disorder."

Jackson, 20, suffers Tourette Syndrome, manifested by involuntary movements and speech. "With Tourette Syndrome," Brown said, "you lose confidence easily. Maybe Bernie should make a trip to Houston and the national Tourette Syndrome Center and learn more about it. . . . "

"I want Denver to win for a variety of reasons," Brown added, "but Bernie needs to take a Dale Carnegie course."

Bickerstaff said Brown should mind his own business.

"I don't need Dale Brown telling me how to relate to people," Bickerstaff said. "My track record is pretty good in this league over 18 years with dealing with young people. Now he's going to tell me who to hire and who to fire?"
