Baltimore Orioles -- Signed RHP Todd Frohwirth as six-year minor league free agent. Frohwirth, 27, appeared in 45 games in 1989 for the Philadelphia Phillies, all in relief, and pitched last season for Class AAA Scranton-Wilkes Barre, Pa., going 3-3 with a 3.95 ERA.

San Francisco Giants -- Acquired Jimmy Williams, a LHP with no major league experience, from Minnesota to complete the Dec. 5 trade that sent Steve Bedrosian to the Twins. Williams, 25, had a 4-6 record and 5.04 ERA last year with Portland of the Pacific Coast League. The Giants earlier received RHP Johnny Ard in the deal.

Texas Rangers -- Manager Bobby Valentine agreed to one-year contract extension that will keep him with the club through 1992.


North Carolina -- Announced freshman C Carrie McKee (Oakton High School) will miss the rest of women's basketball season after reconstructive surgery on her left knee.

Montgomery-Rockville -- QB John Kaleo, WR Dwayne Freeman named first-team football junior college all-Americans; WR Tyrone Fitch, LB Derrick Ruffin honorable mention. G George Garbis named second-team soccer all-American.

Clemson -- Indefinitely suspended reserve F Sean Tyson, team's fourth-leading scorer, for violating undisclosed disciplinary policy.

Academic All-Americans -- For South Atlantic soccer, Nigel Burdett (Maryland), Todd Colonna (Georgetown) and David Viscovich (William and Mary).

CORRECTION Report in Tuesday's editions on Peggi Dickison winning an orienteering award contained errors. Dickison, 30, lives in Upper Marlboro, and won the USOC U.S. Orienteering Federation Female Athlete of the Year for third straight year. Dickison won the U.S. women's individual title, and was second in long course championship.
