Detroit Tigers -- RHP Dan Petry, 32, accepted salary arbitration. He was 10-9 last season. RHP Lance McCullers wasn't offered a contract because of medical problems. He was disabled July 19 with a blood clot in his right shoulder.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Claimed LHP Rosario Rodriguez from the Reds; released C Dann Bilardello and OF Scott Little.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Acquired RHP Darren Holmes from the Dodgers for minor league C Bert Heffernan.


Sacramento Surge (WLAF) -- Named Kay Stephenson, 46, coach. He was the youngest coach in the NFL when named by the Buffalo Bills in 1983. He was fired after a 2-14 season in 1984. Since then, he has been in the real estate business in Pensacola, Fla. He was a finalist for the University of Florida coaching job last year.


American -- Michael Brady was promoted from assistant men's soccer coach to head women's coach. He played soccer for the Eagles 1981-85 and was a three-time all-American.

Navy -- Sophomore swimmer Mary Beth Sines, from Woodbridge, qualified for the NCAA Division II meet in the 100- and 200- meter butterfly.

Robert E. Lee -- Christian Godart, who coaches girls soccer, was named U.S. Region III (southern) coach of the year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. His team was 20-0 in winning the AAA Virginia title.
