Georgetown Prep scored a tenacious 62-49 victory last night over homestanding O'Connell on the strength of a disciplined trapping zone defense that put the previously undefeated Knights into a shooting slump.

The Little Hoyas (5-0), after a first half of settling in, opened a 34-22 margin at the 6:28 mark of the third quarter. Georgetown Prep's A. J. Wood ignited the Little Hoyas' surge with an assortment of baseline drives and handy work with offensive rebounds. Wood finished with 20 points.

"I think we were great as a team out there," said Wood, who also shined as an All-Met soccer player this fall. "I fit in well with everyone. No one person stood out. It was a total team effort."

But the Knights (6-1) wouldn't go quietly. O'Connell whittled the Little Hoyas' lead to four, running off three straight baskets before Marty King's layin made it 49-43.

"We knew coming in they played great defense," Wood said. "They're a great team and we just wanted to be competitive."

O'Connell got no closer as Georgetown Prep continued its game-long rebounding frenzy, preventing the Knights from virtually any second shots. King grabbed 13 rebounds, Wood 11.

"I think we shot a little better in the second half as well as rebounded better," said Georgetown Prep Coach Frank Gilmore. "I didn't want {Mark} Meyers to go berserk on us either. I knew we weren't going to shut him out but I hoped we could slow him down."

The Little Hoyas did just that. Though he finished with 16 points, Meyers was held in check for most of the first half and the beginning of the third quarter, allowing the Little Hoyas to build their lead.

With an eight-point cushion at 54-46 with 2:09 left in the fourth quarter, Georgetown Prep's impeccable ball control extinguished any hopes of an O'Connell rally as the Little Hoyas spread the court and forced O'Connell into fouls. Georgetown Prep shot nine for 10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Georgetown Prep pulled away for good with under two minutes left as Wood hit two free throws and King's jump shot made it 60-49.
