BASKETBALL Dallas Mavericks -- Placed Fat Lever on the injured list, delaying his return until Jan. 9. Lever, who had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Nov. 13, was activated from the injured list Monday. G Kelvin Upshaw, who was waived when Lever was activated, was signed to a 10-day contract.
BASEBALL Texas Rangers -- Acquired LHP Jim Poole from the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor league Ps Steve Allen and David Lynch. Poole, 24, was 6-7 with a 2.40 ERA with Class AA San Antonio and had 16 saves.
TENNIS Hopman Cup -- Monica Seles overcame jet lag to spark Yugoslavia to a 3-0 victory over Italy and a place in the quarterfinals of the team tournament in Perth, Australia. Seles, who arrived in Perth less than 24 hours before her match, defeated Raffaella Reggi, 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, in the opening singles. Goran Prpic beat Paolo Cane, 6-4, 6-3, in the second match, and Seles and Prpic then defeated Cane and Reggi, 8-3, in mixed doubles, reduced to one set because the victory has been clinched. Quarterfinal matchups: Yugoslavia vs. the Soviet Union, top-seeded United States vs. Germany, No. 2 Spain vs. France and No. 3 Switzerland vs. Australia. New York Hardcourt Championships -- In Blue Point, N.Y., second-seeded Randy Vigmostad of Washington beat No. 4 John Milbank of Morristown, N.J., 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to today's final against top-seeded Phil Williamson of Mount Vernon, N.Y.
