EAST LANSING, MICH., DEC. 29 -- Jamel Perkins scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead George Mason to a 70-61 victory over Coastal Carolina tonight to take third place in the Cutlass Classic at Michigan State's Breslin Event Center.
The Patriots' victory broke a seven-game losing streak that included a 66-65 home loss to Coastal Carolina on Dec. 17.
George Mason (3-8) led 31-18 at halftime but had to hold off a Chanticleers rally that closed the margin to 40-36 with 13:07 left. The Patriots ended the Coastal Carolina (6-3) threat with a 9-2 run, then added an 8-0 streak late to ice it.
Byron Tucker added 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Patriots. Eddie Lesaine led Coastal Carolina with 20.
The Chanticleers played without leading scorer and rebounder Tony Dunkin, who sprained his left knee in Friday's first-round loss to Louisiana Tech.
George Mason had led 17-16 with 7:55 remaining in the first half but held the Chanticleers to just two free throws the rest of the period, and took their 17-point lead into intermission.
Coastal Carolina shot just 20 percent (7-35) for the half and the Patriots hit on 53.8 percent (14-26).
