COLLEGES Iowa -- All-Big Ten DT Jim Johnson will miss Tuesday's Rose Bowl game against Washington. He strained his left knee in practice Friday. Notre Dame -- FL Rusty Setzer has pneumonia and is out for tomorrow's Orange Bowl and FB Ryan Mihalko has missed the last two practices because of back spasms and is doubtful. Neither special team player was expected to see play much, but Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz called their loss crucial because of Colorado's good kick returners.
SKATING Snowflake International -- Les Pirouettes de Laval of Canada won the senior division figure skating title in Saturday's final medal round of the Invitation Precision Team Championship. The championship included more than 900 skaters from six nations in a two-day, 36-team event at Boston University. Second place went to the Goldenettes of Garfield Heights, Ohio. The event is sanctioned by the U.S. Figure Skating Association and the International Skating Union.
AUTO RACING Paris-Dakar Rally -- Three-time champion Ari Vatanen of Finland took the lead after the short prologue in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Driving a Citroen, he toured the twisting 2.3-mile course in 3 minutes 45 seconds to put him seven seconds ahead of Swede Ken Erickson's Mitsubishi Pajero. Erickson had a one-second margin over France's Pierre Lartigue, also in a Pajero.
BASKETBALL Haarlem Basketball Week -- A team of all-stars from the World Basketball League beat Tallinn of Soviet Estonia, 122-106, to win the ninth annual event in Haarlem, the Netherlands. WBL forward Barry Mitchel of Virginia Beach, Va., had 28 points and 10 rebounds as the American team of 6-foot-5 and under players clinched the tournament title for the second year in a row.
