KINGSTON, R.I., JAN. 3 -- Eric Leslie scored 21 points, including 12 in the final nine minutes, as Rhode Island pulled away to an 81-72 victory over George Washington in an Atlantic 10 game.

Jeff Kent contributed 19 points and eight rebounds for Rhode Island (5-3, 1-0). Dirkk Surles paced George Washington with 18 points; Glen Sitney and Ellis McKinnie had 15 apiece.

The loss snapped a three-game Colonials winning streak. The Colonials (6-4, 2-2) have lost their last eight games to Rhode Island. The last time they defeated the Rams was in 1987.

After trailing 38-35 at the half, George Washington came back in the second half as the lead changed seven times before the Colonials took a 68-65 lead on McKinnie's jumper with 5:12 remaining.

But that was the last time the Colonials led. From there, Rhode Island went on a 14-4 run to close the game with Kent and Leslie scoring six points during the decisive spurt.

George Washington's only basket during that run came on Sitney's layup at 1:57, trimming the lead to 74-72. The Colonials scored one basket the remainder of the game while missing four three-point attempts.

Rhode Island scored 18 of its final 20 points on foul shots.
