English FA Cup -- First Division rivals Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest played a 0-0 tie in the third round of the Cup tournament and will have a replay Wednesday at Nottingham Forest. Barnsley and Leeds tied, 1-1, and replay Wednesday at Leeds. Manchester City defeated Burnley, 1-0.
Paris-Dakar Rally -- The leader in Dirkou, Niger, after eight days on the road: three-time champion Ari Vatanen of Finland. He took the latest stage, 376 miles from Tumu, Libya, to Dirkou, in a Citroen by 2 minutes 50 seconds ahead of Frenchman Pierre Lartigue in a Mitsubishi and took the overall lead from Jacky Ickx of Belgium, who lost more than 40 minutes because of motor problems.
Alpine World Cup -- In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, Guenther Mader of Austria won a men's Super-G race; Franz Heinzer of Switzerland became the Cup overall leader by finishing second while previous leader Alberto Tomba of Italy took the week off. In Bad Kleinkirchheim, Austria, defending Cup downhill champion Katrin Gutensohn of Germany won her second downhill of the season.
World Cup Circuit -- Olympic champion Jens Weissflog of Germany won a four-hill competition at Bischofshofen, Germany.
