ORANGEBURG, S.C., JAN. 7 -- Chris Felix scored six of his 25 points in overtime to lead South Carolina State to a 94-85 victory over Howard in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game tonight at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Center.
A 6-foot-6 junior from Mackin High School, he scored the go-ahead basket at 4:53 of the extra period to give his team an 81-79 lead. He came back 20 seconds later after Howard missed a shot, scoring on a tip-in to put the Bulldogs (6-6 overall and 3-0 in the MEAC) up by four. Travis Williams (29 points) then scored two baskets around Petey Faust's free throw to give South Carolina State an 86-79 lead with 3:29 to go.
The Bison (1-12 and 0-2) got two free throws from Kelsey Sturdivant (11 points, 7 rebounds), a layup from Tyrone Powell and three free throws from Skip Bynum (17 points), reducing the deficit to 86-85 with 1:06 to go.
The Bison, losers of eight straight, then gave up the last six points.
Howard appeared to have a chance to win in regulation when an official initially ruled that Sturdivant had been fouled on a rebound with no time remaining. However, after a conference by the officials, it was ruled that time had expired and the game went into overtime.
Bethany 68, Gallaudet 54:
Al Palsa scored 18 points for the winners (3-7) in Bethany, W.Va. Gallaudet (4-5) was led by Anthony Jones with 24 points and Brian Bippus with 12.
Lehigh 85, Towson State 83:
Bob Krizansky and Dozie Mbonu scored 21 points each as the Engineers rallied to win in Bethlehem, Pa. Krizansky made two free throws with 4:11 to play to give Lehigh (6-5) its first lead of the second half, 74-73.
