BASEBALL Charleston Wheelers -- Class A South Atlantic League team (Cincinnati Reds farm team) named Dave Miley, who became youngest minor league manager three years ago at 25, its manager. Miley, who started managing careeer with Greensboro Hornets, led Cedar Rapids Class A team to Midwest League playoffs in 1989 and 1990. San Diego Padres -- Free agent 2B Marty Barrett agreed to a minor-league contract, and will go to spring training as a non-roster player. If he makes the team, he would get the major league minimum of $100,000. Boston already is paying him $1.1 million for 1991 from his guaranteed contract and an additional $300,000 from a 1992 buyout.

OBITUARY Lawrence Langley, whose 99-yard interception return for a touchdown in 1936 is still a Southern Cal record, died Dec. 30 after a long illness in Los Angeles. Langley, 77, was buried Monday at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Calif. Langley's interception return against Notre Dame on Dec. 5, 1936, helped the Trojans gain a 13-13 tie.
AUTO RACING Paris-Dakar Rally -- Ari Vatanen of Finland leads teammate Jacky Ickx by 40 minutes midway through the endurance race after taking the second half of the ninth stage, a 307-route from Gossololom to Agadez in Niger.
