BASEBALL St. Louis Cardinals -- Signed free agent LHP Jamie Moyer to one-year, minor league contract. Moyer, 28, was 2-6 with a 4.66 earned run average last year with Texas Rangers. He appeared in 33 games and had 10 starts. Toronto Blue Jays -- C Pat Borders agreed to one-year contract worth $700,000, a $520,000 raise. Borders, 27, batted .286 last season with 15 home runs and 49 RBI. Philadelphia Phillies -- Signed free agent IF Wally Backman to two-year contract worth $1.3 million. Backman, 31, hit .292 with two home runs and 28 RBI in 104 games with Pittsburgh last season. Cincinnati Reds -- Signed OF Glenn Braggs and minor league P Gino Minutelli to one-year contracts. Braggs, 28, hit .299 last year with six home runs and 28 RBI in 72 games.

FOOTBALL Indianapolis Colts -- Reported LB Fredd Young likely will retire after failing postseason physical because of lingering hip injury. Young, 29, missed five of last six games of the season.

COLLEGES Syracuse -- Football defensive coordinator Norm Gerber has agreed to follow Dick MacPherson to New England Patriots, but offensive coordinator George DeLeone will remain to work with new head coach Paul Pasqualoni, according to Syracuse Post-Standard and Herald-Journal.
