MARTINSVILLE, VA. -- When Martinsville High School basketball coach Husky Hall recorded his 500th victory, it was just another night's work for the winningest active coach in the Virginia High School League.

"I don't keep up with the coaching record," he said Tuesday night after the Martinsville Bulldogs beat Bassett, 74-71, on a last-second shot. "We just play the games as they come. We take the wins as they come."

After the game, though, Hall shed some tears before fans, family and friends. "I can't say anything now," Hall blurted into the microphone after receiving a plaque.

Hall, 62 and a veteran of more than 30 years of coaching, has helped put Martinsville basketball on the map -- 500 victories and only 144 losses, 15 district titles and a 77.8 winning percentage.

"It sort of puts you in awe, to think about winning that many ballgames," said Bassett Coach Tony Weeks. "Maybe if I coached until I was 80, I might come close to that."

"I think maybe I'll go one more year after this year, but I don't know," Hall said. "I thought maybe this year would be my last year.

"Then some of my friends said, 'What are you going to do? Coaching is all you know.' So I don't know what I'll do. Winning helps keep you young."
