One of the smallest schools in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference turned into a giant-killer last night at the third annual Southern Wrestling tournament in Harwood, Md.
Pitted against a field of 16 other schools, Chopticon emerged the champion with 212.5 points.
Defending champion South River, runner-up by a point to Thomas Stone in the inaugural tournament, took second at 183, edging host Southern (177.5). Chopticon sent five wrestlers to the finals. Four left as champions.
Derric Holbrook (160 pounds) won the crucial match of the night for Chopticon when he edged Southern's Chris Boston, 4-3.
"Everyone knew that it would come down to Southern, South River and Chopticon," said Braves Coach Dane Kramer. "The 160 was a big win for us because we were keeping an eye on Southern."
Northern's Joey Mulaney (103) gave the Braves their only loss in the finals, defeating Phil Gainey, 6-4.
Other Chopticon winners in the finals were Jeff Daigle, who won by decision at 112 pounds, and Dwayne Vogel (140) and John Scheer (heavyweight), who won with pins. Vogel pinned Southern's one-armed David Ley at 4:26. Scheer finished Glenelg's Justin Stoddard at 3:56.
In one of the night's best matches, Northern's Tony Lignelli (119) and South River's Greg Nida finished regulation in a 2-2 stalemate after Lignelli registered a third-period reversal.
In sudden death, the wrestlers locked up and attempted to keep the other at bay, but a shooting Lignelli scored a 4-2 win with a takedown. TEAM SCORES
