Brian Bippus scored more than half his team's points but couldn't quite get Gallaudet over the hump last night as Mary Washington spoiled the Bison's Capital Athletic Conference visit to Fredericksburg, Va., 55-50.
Bippus put up 27 points, but the Eagles' Richie Treger got nine of his 18 in a critical second-half run.
Gallaudet (8-6, 1-2) led, 29-20, at the half. Mary Washington (5-9, 2-1) opened the second half with a 17-6 run for a 37-35 lead. Treger hit three three-pointers in the run.
The lead changed hands several times until Steve Posey put the Eagles ahead 48-46 with 2:50 left.
Mary Washington added insurance in the final seconds when Anthony Jones was called for a technical and ejected for taking a swing at an Eagle. Gallaudet Coach James DeStefano also was ejected for arguing with the officials, and the Eagles made three of four foul shots for a 53-46 lead with :27 left.
St. Francis (Pa.) 88, Mount St. Mary's 77: Joe Anderson scored 22 points and Tom Bennetch delivered a career-high 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead St. Francis in Northeast Conference action in Loretto, Pa.
Mike Iuzzolino added 17 points and John Hilvert scored 10 as the Red Flash improved to 13-5 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
The Mountaineers, with 22 points from Scott Murphy and 16 apiece from Alex Watson and Dave Kapaona, fell to 6-11, 4-3.
Bennetch and Anderson combined for 25 points in the first half as St. Francis took a 43-36 lead into the locker room. Mount St. Mary's closed to 64-62 with 7:31 remaining on a dunk by Watson. St. Francis responded with a 15-9 run for an 80-71 lead. Iuzzolino added six points in the final 2:00.
Capitol 80, Beaver 73: Keith Alvarez scored 24 points and Shane Smith 16 to lead the Laurel school over the Glenside, Pa., college at High Point High in Beltsville. Capitol improved to 6-9. Beaver (1-15) was led by Keith Mondillo's 24 points and Jason Hines's 22.
