ACC All-Academic Football Team -- Virginia placed five players and Maryland four on this year's team. Cavaliers placed WR Derek Dooley, OL Ray Roberts, DL Joe Hall, DB Buddy Omohondro and P Ed Garno. Maryland: WR Barry Johnson, RB Chad Wiestling, LB Glenn Page and DL Rick Fleece.

Navy -- Wrestling team (record: 9-2) was ranked 22nd in nation by Amateur Wrestling News. Penn State was No. 1.

Tennessee -- Has received oral commitment from WR Dwayne Freeman, formerly at Montgomery-Rockville.


Wilde Lake -- Maryland Class 2A champion's two first-team All-Met selections announced college choices: RB Raphael Wall (1,755 yards rushing, 31 TDs) will go to Maryland and DB Ricky Rowe (returned three of six interceptions for touchdowns, 20.1-yard punt return average) will go to Penn State.


Yakult Swallows -- Japanese team that has trained in Yuma, Ariz., each spring since 1978 will not be coming this year because of Persian Gulf War. Yuma Mayor Bob Tippett said Yakult informed him Wednesday it felt it would not be paying proper respect if it sent its young players to train in U.S. at a time when U.S. has sent its young men into war.

CORRECTION Sprinter Daron Council's college was incorrectly listed in Thursday's editions. He attended Auburn.
